Elaine Cook

Elaine Cook was born and raised in St. John's, Newfoundland, Canada. She married and moved to Toronto in 1980 and worked there for 25 years. She now lives in cottage country near Bancroft Ontario where she and hubby retired. While she danced through her teens doing the jive, the twist, disco, etc. She has no formal dance training. She discovered “Latin” line dancing in 2005 but did not discover “modern” line dancing until 2013. Since there were no modern line dance classes in her area, she began her own classes with her co-instructor friend, Judy Martin. She began writing easy social dances in 2014 for her classes and to teach at local workshops. She had no music or choreography training but enjoyed the process of writing a dance. In 2020, when Rob Fowler began a virtual choreography course, she jumped at the chance to learn and grow. She hopes you can see from dances published since then, the progress she has made. And, the journey continues. “It has been the greatest joy to discover line dancing in my retirement. I value the wonderful friendships I have made, and continue to make, in this wonderful line dance family.” Elaine had two dances nominated for Crystal Boot Awards 2021: Sundown Swing and Moving On Tango. Elaine Cook has choreographed 19 dances, of which 9 have been co-choreographed. Their first published stepsheet on CopperKnob is Get My Name from May 2014, with their most recent stepsheet of Show Me Your Light in December 2020. Additionally, Elaine Cook has recently had 1 dance in the top 10 with Sundown Swing.

STAMPED DANCES

7 Summers Cha

Sundown Swing (Crystal Boot Nominated)

Dancing Dirty (Jack n Jill comp entry)

MOVING ON TANGO

(Crystal Boot Nominated)

Absolute Beginner I had been looking for a good track for a tango. Rob played this music one day in class and I asked for it. Draft 2 - I originally had a lunge in Draft 1. Rob noted I didn't have it technically correct and maybe should do a step-tap-step. Another good lesson, if you don't feel comfortable doing the step, don't include it. I now try to write what I can dance reasonably well.

7 SUMMERS CHA

Improver

I wanted to do a country cha. Charlie Bowring put the music in class and I asked for it. Draft 6 - the last 16 counts took several drafts and I was so happy Rob pushed me to keep changing it because when I finally got it, I knew it - it just flowed. Really good lesson there - don't settle if it doesn't feel right.

SUNDOWN SWING

(Crystal Boot Nominated)

Beginner

Written with Darren Tubridy He found 2 possible tracks by Johnny Reid and we both loved this one Draft 2 - it was a genuine collaboration . Rob noted we had a mix of Beginner & Improver steps in Draft 1. So once we decided on Beginner, we just had to make a couple of changes. Another good lesson - don't mix levels.

WITHOUT YOU

Improver Level.

I heard the music on The Voice TV program. Loved it. Chills. I initially wrote an easy beginner waltz for my class but Rob thought the music was too good for that. We worked to write this Improver level. Draft 3 - but with lots of help from Rob on this first dance done in the program.

I.C.E.

Elaine also took part in our large group Virtual Choreography session. The group all come together to join Debbie Ellis and Laura Sway Live.  Everyone who joined in this session contributed with ideas, counts, accents, highlight and general support.

Here is the demonstration of our finished project.

DANCING DIRTY

Dancing Dirty Written with David Sinfield as part of the February I.C.E. Choreography Competition. I found the music. I had heard another track by Tyler Farr in class and I loved it so I went to his album and found Dirty. David and I loved the sultry country vibe. Draft 2 – needed to change 8 counts to remove duplicate hip bumps and better hit the key word “dirty”.
